After the drawing or sample is studied, dimensions and tolerances are calculated with micrometers or vernier calipers. Lathes, mills, shapers, or grinders are then set up and run to cut the part, and some jobs include programming numerically controlled machines. Feed and speed are watched during the cut, finished units are measured and tested for defects, and the machines themselves are kept in working order. The same shop knowledge is used to modify or repair instruments and industrial equipment. It tends to fit people who like switching among machines, working to tight metal tolerances, and figuring out how a part should be made.
