Dimensions and clearances are checked with calipers, micrometers, gauge blocks, or dial indicators, and finished dies are inspected for smoothness, contour, and defects. Metals are chosen for hardness or heat tolerance, and parts are lifted and clamped on worktables with hoists or vises.
