Job orders, drawings, and blueprints get turned into a sequence of machine moves: tool choice, speeds, feed rates, and the paths the cutter will follow. Programs are written in the language of each machine's controller, stored on disk or other media, and checked with a trial run or a computer simulation before parts are cut. When a piece does not meet specifications, the program is revised and retested; existing programs are also changed to run more efficiently. Some of this work includes setting up, operating, or maintaining the machines themselves. Suits people who like practical math, close reading of drawings, and testing automated sequences until parts come out right.

AI & the future of this role
CAM tools and generative pathing may take over much of routine program writing, simulation, and revision once a shop’s standards are captured. Complex fixturing and rare materials still need human judgment, but a large share of programming volume looks exposed to automation.
