Computer-controlled machines or robots are set up to machine a workpiece to the sizes on a blueprint or program. Tools, fixtures, and the part are mounted and aligned with hand tools and gauges; speed, feed, and cut positions are calculated, and new specs are entered at the computer. While the machine runs, the operator listens for dull tools or vibration and stops the cycle to change tooling or unload a finished piece. Finished dimensions are checked with precision instruments, templates, and fixtures. Suits people who like reading blueprints, tending a running machine, and catching trouble by ear and by gauge.
