Production
Submitted text and images get laid out on the computer—type size, position, and page arrangement—until the file is ready to print. Proofs are generated so the printed piece can be checked before a press run; preflight reviews make sure fonts, graphics, and images are complete. Some jobs go further, converting electronic files to printing plates on laser plate-making equipment, which also needs cleaning, adjustment, and minor repair. The work is done at a computer and at plate-making machines, with close reading of files and proofs. It suits people who like exact page makeup, spotting errors in type and images, and checking files before they go to the printer.
