The day-to-day work is building and updating GIS databases, then turning that spatial data into maps, tables, and reports. That includes entering coordinates and tabular records, digitizing or scanning maps, checking incoming data for accuracy and completeness, and running spatial analyses in GIS software. Some of the work is custom programming or software changes for GIS applications; some is helping scientists and other users get the maps and answers they need. Most of it happens at a computer, using GIS software and related hardware. It suits people who like careful, map-based data work and solving spatial problems in a methodical way.
