What you might do
- Monitor inmate activities to prevent disturbances, escapes, and rule violations
- Inspect facilities and conduct searches to ensure safety and security
- Escort inmates to and from cells, courtrooms, medical facilities, and other locations
- Enforce rules and regulations of the correctional facility
- Prepare reports on inmate behavior and incidents
- Respond to emergencies and provide first aid as needed
AI & the future of this role
While AI and robotics can assist in surveillance and routine monitoring, human judgment, de-escalation skills, and ethical decision-making in unpredictable situations remain critical for correctional officers. Physical presence and interpersonal dynamics in high-stakes environments are difficult to fully automate.
