Assigned sections of track are patrolled so broken rail, loose joints, or misaligned switches can be found and fixed. Operators drive spikes with single- or multiple-head machines, tighten or loosen joint bolts with track wrenches, cut rails to length, and weld pieces such as switch points and frogs. Leveling indicators are watched to keep rails aligned; switches are adjusted with wrenches and replacement parts. Machines need oil, lubrication, and hydraulic fluid kept at specified levels. The work takes place on railroad lines, plant yards, quarries, pits, or mines, and tends to suit people who like running and servicing heavy equipment and making precise mechanical adjustments.
