The core of the job is reading transcript or type setup and marking errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, type, or arrangement with standard printers' marks. Corrected proofs are read again to confirm every change was made, and information or figures on one record are checked against another or against the original. Marked proofs go back to authors, editors, typists, or typesetters; grammar questions may mean checking a reference book or asking a second reader. Some time goes to talking through manuscript changes and to archiving or looking things up on a computer. Close, line-by-line reading and a habit of comparing one record with another are what the work asks for.
