Model Makers, Wood
Production
The job is turning drawings and written specifications into precise wooden models, patterns, templates, full-scale mock-ups, and molds for product parts and production tools. Stock is selected and marked with scribers, squares, and protractors; parts are then planed, shaved, filed, scraped, and sanded by hand, and checked against templates as the shape develops. Pieces are glued, doweled, bolted, or screwed together, and each part is marked so others can see how it assembles. Designers are consulted when sizes, contours, or machine setups are unclear. It suits people who like reading specifications, working wood to tight dimensions, and checking their own measurements as they go.

AI & the future of this role
Building precise wooden models still calls for craft skill and physical iteration, yet CAD, CNC, and 3D printing may take over more layout and fabrication. Demand could soften where digital prototypes replace full-size wooden mockups.
