- Read and record electricity, gas, water, or steam meter readings
- Verify meter accuracy and report discrepancies

AI & the future of this role
Meter reading is highly automatable with smart meters and IoT sensors, requiring minimal human intervention for data collection. The physical aspect (traveling to locations) can also be automated with drones or fixed infrastructure. Only legacy systems without upgrades may temporarily retain human readers.
