Runs routine chemical tests on body fluids such as blood or urine, using a microscope or automatic analyzer to look for abnormalities, then enters the findings into a computer. Results are checked against specifications, standard solutions and reagents are mixed from set formulas, and equipment is set up, calibrated, cleaned, and tested for sterility. Some of the work involves patients: collecting blood or tissue samples while following aseptic technique. The work may be supervised by a medical technologist and can include instructing other technicians or assistants. Suits people who like repeatable lab procedures, careful sample handling, and a mix of bench work and brief patient contact.
