Prepares and examines cell samples, including Pap smears, body fluids, and fine-needle aspirations, looking for abnormal color, shape, size, or patterns in the cells. Slides are checked for quality first, then abnormal findings go to a pathologist for further review, along with the clinical details needed for the pathology report. The work also includes verifying patient and specimen information, following collection and safety standards, and sometimes helping physicians collect cells during a fine-needle aspiration. Fits people who prefer detailed microscope screening, noticing small visual differences, and sending abnormal slides to a pathologist rather than writing the diagnosis.
