Before a cut, they test the air for methane, hang ventilation tubing and curtains, and check that the roof and ribs will hold. Then they drive the mining machine to the face, set cutters or torches, and rip coal, ore, or rock onto conveyors or shuttle cars in one continuous run. They decide where the next holes or channels go and reposition the machine. The work is underground at the mine face. It suits people who like running large machines, watching air and ground conditions, and following tight safety checks.
