The job is finding out what a child or family needs, lining up matching help, and checking whether it works, through interviews with children, parents, or groups and through case records that have to stay current. In schools, that often means working with teachers and parents on truancy, misbehavior, or other problems that get in the way of learning. The role also reaches courts and protective services: testimony, custody questions, abuse concerns, and arranging foster homes or adoptions. Medical or psychiatric tests may be set up to clarify what is going on. It suits people who listen in tense situations, keep many contacts coordinated, and decide next steps carefully.
