A typical day is running bioinformatics software, statistical tools, or data-mining methods on molecular data, then checking that both the inputs and the outputs make sense. Sequence and analysis needs change, so existing programs, web tools, and database queries get extended; some of the work is building or maintaining applications that turn biological records into searchable databases. Time also goes to pulling records from genomic, protein, mutation, and gene-expression databases, and to talking with researchers, clinicians, or IT staff about what they need. Reports and scientific papers may include this work. Fits people who prefer hands-on computational work with biological data and keeping tools and databases usable.
