Works with individuals and families who have, or may develop, a mental health or substance use disorder. Mental and physical status are assessed from the symptoms people bring in; the nurse then decides whether the problem is mainly physiological or psychological and names a diagnosis. Psychotherapy is part of treatment; psychotropic medicines may be prescribed when state rules and practice agreements allow, then usage and results are watched. Histories, findings, plans, and outcomes go into the record, and patients and families are taught about the condition, medicines, and the plan. A better match for people who prefer careful listening, sorting overlapping symptoms, and following treatment over weeks or months.
